The Myths About Link Popularity

As competition among websites increase, close attention is being paid to rankings in major search engines. Since a high ranking in a keyword can "make or break" a business, webmasters are looking to find any method to increase their ranking.

By examining the algorithms of Google and other search engines, it is easy to see that a high value is being placed on the number of links (and quality) pointing to a website.

As a result, most webmasters have realized the importance of finding partners to link to their Internet business.

Although link exchanges are vital to any marketing plan, there are some myths that are perpetuated by many so-called "experts". To run a smart link exchange campaign, it is important to understand these myths and make sure that you do not fall for them.

Myth 1 - Link to every site

When I first started my link exchange campaign, I would link to every site possible. As a result, my rankings suffered. As I learned more, I discovered that I could improve my listings by linking to sites that complemented my own. In order run a smart link exchange program, it is important to focus on linking to sites that are closely related to your product or service without being a direct competitor.

For instance, my original site sells Ethnic Jewelry. So, I look for link partners among other jewelry stores that do not sell the same type of jewelry that is listed in my store.

Myth 2 - All people will add my site if I add theirs first

To receive a link from an Internet business, most people will usually add the site's link first. Unfortunately, not every potential partner will add your link even if you have already added theirs. Sometimes a website is just not interested in linking with your site. The problem is many webmasters will not let you know that they are not going to link to your site. So, you might be linking to a website that is not returning the favor.

A great way to ensure that you are only linking to reciprocal sites is to put each link into a "temporary position" until you receive validation that the site is listing your business.

Myth 3 - The name of my website should be in the title of the link

Another mistake I made when I first started out, was to have the name of my website in the links that were pointing to my business.

Eventually I learned that many search engines, especially Google, pay attention to the title of the link pointing towards your site. So, if you are looking for top placement for specific keywords, then they should be used in the title of the link instead of your website name.

Taking the Ethnic Jewelry example from above, your link title would look like this:

Ethnic Jewelry Store: Here we sell evil eye jewelry and Turkish jewelry.

Myth 4 - Only link to sites with a high Google Page Rank

In my opinion, the biggest "Catch-22" for webmasters is that many sites will not link to an Internet business unless it has a certain "Google Page Rank". But at some point, every site has started out with a low page ranking. So how did they get a high ranking if no one would link to them in the first place?

Instead of focusing on a page rank, many successful websites look instead at the quality of the Internet business.

If it is evident that the webmaster has taken the time to create a quality site, then you can assured that a high ranking will eventually happen! By linking to a well designed website, you can be ensured that the value of your link will increase as the website gains a high ranking.

Myth 5: Put all the links on one page in no particular order

When the Internet first gained popularity, webmasters used links as a way to help their visitors. Initially, they placed links as way to complement the content of the website. As the important of links increased, the focus shifted from helping the visitor to helping the webmaster.

Instead of dumping your links onto a single page, you can help both your partners and visitors by creating a directory. Here, you place each link partner into a specific category. This will help visitors (and search engines) navigate your site with ease.

Myth 6: I should avoid all types of "automatic" link programs

Many Internet marketers recommend avoiding automatic link exchange software. They feel that using these programs will actually hurt your rankings rather then help. But, there are a lot of great link exchange websites that automate the process of finding links hurting your search engine rankings.

While exchanging links can be a time-consuming process, it is well worth the effort. By taking time to properly link to complementary websites, you will find that your rankings in important keywords will improve.

3. Writing and submitting articles is a quick way to get alot of backlinks. Create a bio box at the end of each article with a link for your website. Then submit your article to as many directories as possible. Or even better yet use a software of article marketer to submit your articles for you.

These articles can be picked up by other directories, webmasters, or online newsletters and spread all over the internet giving your website a viral marketing benefit.

4. Place classified ads with popular directories like USFreeAds or AdlandPro. Upgrade to paid member and you can place unlimited ads with links pointing back to your website.

5. Blog and ping. In each blog post include a sort resource box with your website address. If you archive you posts this gives you backlinks for years to come.

6. Trade links with quality websites. We are not talking about reciprocal linking to directories with thousands of worthless links. A better strategy is to trade a link with a website that closely mirrors your site without being in direct competition to it. Also look to place their link on one of your pages that has the same page rank as the link they are giving you.

7. Post comments on other peoples blogs. Take the time to read the post before you make a comment. Don't write something worthless like " I like your blog." Make your comments informative and relate to the blog post you just read. Then include your website address along with your name.

8. Internal linking can bring valuable backlinks to your home page. This would be when you put your website address in a hyperlinked keyword phrase and point it back to your home page. This is a great way to build keyword relavancy along with building up your backlinks.

These are a few linking strategies that work. There are many others. Just keep it simple and remember this simple formula.

Cordless drills are pretty amazing. They're portable, pack lots of power and have features that most corded drills don't offer. Cordless power tools get less expensive every year, and the competition is so tight that there are lots of great power tools available. But cordless tools are not all created equal, and we tested a bunch of them so we can tell you which cordless drills to buy. For our test we completely discharged each battery, then recharged, then discharged the battery again. After one more complete charge we were ready to test. Because the amount of force and speed applied in a drilling process can alter the results in such a test, we had two editors (one male, one female) repeat the tests, then we averaged the completed holes on one battery charge. All cordless drills were tested in the high-speed range setting (when available) and with clutches set to zero torque resistance (or screwing mode). For the second test, we sank 1⁄4"-diameter by 11⁄2" - long lag bolts into 11⁄2"-thick cabinet-grade plywood. This test was performed with the power tools speed setting on low, providing maximum torque, and again with the clutches set on zero torque resistance.

Finally we took a look at the ergonomics of the power tools. Each member of our staff evaluated the grip, balance, ease of use for the battery release, chuck, clutch and variable- speed triggers, and came up with an average rating for each cordless drill. We then averaged all the individual scores and came up with an ergonomic rating for each cordless tool. We also decided to divide the cordless drills into consumer and professional categories to fairly compare cordless tool to cordless tool, but our testing also lets you see how the consumer models compare to the pro's .

The Importance of Inbound Links

When you to go search engine such as google, and enter in a search keywords, well say for example "article submission services". The most revelant search keyword will show up. How do you get those spots?

Some people will argue with me here the single most important factor is the incoming links. There are a few types of different incoming links. I personally have had 3 websites rank on number 1 for google.

a)--One way links: One way links are just that. You have a website giving you a one way link to your website. These are valued the highest of all the links coming in. How would you go about getting these types of links? There are websites out there that offer that. Go to google and type in "one way links" You'll get plenty of results. It never hurts to do a little research on the sites before accepting their terms.

b)--Reciprical links: These are links that would exchange with someone, and the most common type of link. How would you go about getting these? Simple, you just ask. Send them an email with your name your website, telling them you want to link. Put the link on your site first, and let the webmaster know where it is. If they don't respond contact again in a week. Still no response, delete the link.

c)--3 Way Links: They are 3 different websites all 1 way linking to each other. For example: Site A,B,C... Site A Links to B Site B Links to C Site C links to A. If this is confusing, draw it out on a piece of paper in a triangle shape, and you will see A--B B--C C--A.

Another important thing to remember is to link to websites that have the same theme as yours. Incoming links can't hurt you, but your out going links can. If you have a website about dogs, you don't want links coming in from Debt Companies, get it?

Of course there are a few other things that contribute to getting a high ranking page, but I'll go over that at a different time.

RealWebMarketing.net: How Many Links Does Your Web Site Have To It?

The number of links from other web sites linking to yours, is a very important factor today in getting your site to rank highly in search engine results. In fact, Google, the number one search engine with a 49% market share, has this to say about it:

"PageRank Technology: PageRank performs an objective measurement of the importance of web pages by solving an equation of more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Instead of counting direct links, PageRank interprets a link from Page A to Page B as a vote for Page B by Page A. PageRank then assesses a page's importance by the number of votes it receives." (emphasis mine)

"PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. Important pages receive a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search results.?

So finding out how many links you have coming to your web site from other sites, is very important. How do you find out?

Go to Google. First of all, Google has a so-called "link" tool (link:yourwebsite.com), but it has been broken for over a year, so don't use it. In fact, if you go to the web site for the White House,http://www.whitehouse.gov, Google's link tool will show it to have 1,000 links to it. Not very likely (the correct number is over a million).

The way to find out how many links you have is to enter, at Google: yourwebsite.com -site:yourwebsite.com

Of course you put your URL or web address into the above string, instead of "yourwebsite.com."

What this does is to show how many sites have your web site address on them, linking to you, but it subtracts the pages from your own web site. If you have multiple sites, do this procedure for all of them.

It is also interesting to do the same thing for several of your competitors' web sites.

Also, at Google, type in one of the top keywords for your type of business. Take the top few web sites for that keyword, and do the process above for that web address (the root domain name, not the individual page), and see how many links those sites have to them. Typically the number will be pretty high for the sites appearing high in the Google results.

If you have not consciously done any sort of link building campaign, chances are that the number of links to your site will not be very high. 10-150 links would qualify as not very high. 400-500 is getting better. But you will probably see in doing the exercise above that it is necessary to get anywhere from 1,000 to over 20,000 links, to be competitive in the search engines, depending on how competitive your given keyword is.

Link Building

The above exercise will show you where your site stands in terms of links. If the number is high, congratulations. You have probably engaged in a successful link building campaign of some kind. But if the number is low, then you need to consider some sort of link building campaign.

Reciprocal Links: Getting reciprocal links, where you and the owner of another web site both link to each other, used to be the hot way to build links to your site. It still can be of some use, but the search engines have begun to discount these links. So that is not the way to go today.

Content Hubs/Article Directories: Content Hubs, also called Article Directories, are large sites with thousands of informational articles on them. The way these work is that you write an article, put the name of your company along with your web address somewhere in the article, and also include a "bio box" at the bottom where you say who you are, and include again your web address and company name. You submit the article to a number of article directories, and once they put the article up, each one of these counts as a link to your site, because of the web address in the article and in the bio box. It will usually take a week or two before you see your links count go up from this.

Plus, if you write good articles that appeal to people who go to the content hubs, they will download your articles and put them up on their own web sites. By submitting the article you are giving the readers permission to do that. So if you write an article that becomes popular, it will get put up on other sites and each one of these will count as an inbound link to your site as well.

There are currently over 1,000 of these content hubs on the Net. Most of them have tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of articles, and many are highly ranked by the search engines. So submitting articles to the content hubs is one of the best ways to build links to your site. Plus there are ways to "supercharge" the number of links you get from this activity.

RSS Feeds: RSS stands for "really simple syndication" or "rich site summary," depending on who you talk to. This is a new and effective way to syndicate content from your site, meaning to get it out to lots of other sites on the web.

The way this is done is first of all to have some articles up on your site, usually with a table of contents page linking to other pages that each have one article on them. Then you build what is called an "XML" file, which is a file that allows for the easy transfer of information from one web site to another. This XML file contains information on all of your articles, including their title, a short blurb on each, and the web address of each article.

Then you go to each of the big RSS search engines. These are search engines that allow people to search for specific information that is being syndicated through an RSS feed or a blog, so that they can subscribe to it.

So you go to all those RSS search engines, and register your RSS feed. Now, information on your RSS feed will be contained in those search engines, and people who search for the keywords contained in your RSS feeds will see the blurbs on your feed and your articles.

Now those people searching for those keywords can subscribe to your RSS feed. That means that if they get some kind of RSS feed reader software (There are some that you put on your computer and use, sort of like an email program, to read RSS feeds, plus there are some that work online), they can subscribe to your feed. Now, every time you put out new content, such as a press release or a new article of some kind, it will appear in their RSS feed reader software. People receiving this information from your RSS feed will often put it up on their own web sites or blogs, and talk about it, thus building links to your web site.

RSS feeds are the cutting edge of link building, and there are indications that the search engines like the links that result from this activity better than some other activities. These RSS feeds are definitely in the "early adopter" phase, but it is growing rapidly.

Summary

Whatever you do to build links to your web site, whether article directory submissions or RSS feeds, having an ongoing link building campaign is a vital necessity for any commercial web site today. And the key to success with either one of these techniques is to continue to submit new content regularly, at least twice a month.

Step #2 Increase Your Reciprocal Links.

The search engines take into account the amount of times a keyword is searched on. The more popular a keyword is that describes your business, the more points you gain for having good keywords. Once all of the criteria are looked at, the points are added up and in a nutshell, this determines your page rank. The higher your page rank, the higher you are listed in the engine. This is a time tested approach and it works in both Directories such as Yahoo! and also in Spider Search Engines such as Google. What you do is setup a link trading directory and makes categories just like a mini Yahoo! except you have them all relate to your market. This provides keyword density and it also gives your link popularity a big boost.
Step #3 Add More Content.

Does your homepage has lots of backlinks, but few words on it ?

Do You've got 50,000 pages, but only 100 have more than 50 words on them?

Do you've got the same content on your pages as 50 other sites have?

How it works.

This is a great technique that also works in both Directories and Spider Search Engines. By adding more content you will keep people who click over to your site there longer and this gets your ranking up in the Directories such as Yahoo! because they track how long a visitor stays at your site. If they click their back button then you will be shown as a site which doesn't help the visitor which will decrease your rank.
Step #4 Improve Your Sites Load Time.

This is another that works with both Spider Search Engines and Directories. This will improve your ranking in Directories because it will keep more of the visitors that click over to your site there longer. Internet users want information and they want it now. If your site loads like molasses then they are going to leave. Directories track how long a visitor stays at your site and rank you accordingly. If a visitor leaves immediately then you're rank goes down because your site was tagged as "not useful". It will improve your ranking in Spider Search Engines because the spiders check for load time and load speed is part of the ranking system when they calculate relevance of a site.
Step #5 Improve Your Keyword Density.

This one only works for Spider Search Engines. The reason is because Directories only review & list you once so you can change your keyword density after they list you but the review and placement of your site has already happened. Keyword density can vary when analyzing a page for various search engines. Different search engines may use different stop words or stemming techniques, resulting in a word being counted by one engine and not counted by another. Aside from the problem of determining what constitutes a word, there is also the problem of determining which tags various search engines will support. The most basic scenario might have a search engine using only body text. More elaborate scenarios might have a search engine using body text, ALT tags, META tags, comment tags, and a handful of other tags. For example, if a keyword is used 5 times in page with 100 index able text words, the page has a keyword density of 5%. Generally, keyword density should be high enough that a keyword is recognized as a main topic of a page and not an incidental, unimportant word. At the same time, keyword density should not be too high, as some search engines may penalize a page for keyword stuffing.
