The Deadly Myth about Search Engine Optimization and Google.

In the present time, we are so obsessed with Search Engine Optimization and Google Page Rank that many of the webmasters tend to think that SEO and Top Positions in Google would lead them to a hidden treasure and would immediately result in Tens of Thousands of dollars of business flowing into their bank.

They are wrong, Top Rankings wouldn’t be your best bet always, I’ve seen websites in Top Positions in Google for the worlds most competitive keywords, sustaining there for a considerable time and then eventually, falling down, changed their business methodology, or changing their business plans altogether.

Apologies for my Grammatical Errors, but I’m only a techie trying to share my experience but not a Web Copywriter or a linguistic.

I wouldn’t name the website here, but I know well about them because I was trying to compete with them for two most competitive keywords “web design company” and “web designing company” If you doubt that these keywords are so competitive, I would like you to have a look at this great tool which would tell you how competitive a keyword and a phrase is, it’s fun to play with.

This website was on top for a long time, their portfolio was nice, their site design and layout was brilliant and there prices were very competitive, but suddenly one fine day I saw their business methodology totally changed, they were now selling an online casino package and have shut down their web design operations and kept them on a low profile (at least on their website it seems that way). After a month their rankings fell and they were virtually non existent on that keyword term, but of course they are on prominent position for their targeted keywords now once again, but the keywords are different obviously.

So why did they do that, If they were willing to foray into a different field, why did they leave their existent business, I would think because their existent business was not very profitable so they decided to shut it down and do something which is more worthwhile for them to do.

So, Top Rankings do not guarantee Mind Blowing Profits, If your Industry is over saturated, then you can’t count on Top Rankings for a pool of money flowing in to your business.

The idea is that Webmasters should not keep trying to compete on competitive keywords and spend all their valuable time and resources there, Top Rankings could help your business grow but it’s not the only way where you can grow your business, I was able to get top rankings on keywords “web design company” in Yahoo & MSN, so did it help my business?? The answer is – Not Much. Much of the Business (90% of it), I’m generating is from direct marketing, emailing and other traffic building activities. This is not good considering that 40% of Search Traffic comes from Yahoo & MSN, 50% from Google, and 10% from other search engines, so where did I go wrong. The answer is no where, I didn’t do anything wrong, It’s a fact that only 10-20% of your customers come from Search Engines by searching your most optimized keywords even if you are on Top 10 Positions on them. Of course if you solely don’t rely on Search Engines for your Business.

Opt in E-Mail Marketing is the cheapest media to grow your business, Currently I’m getting 150-200 inquiries from customers interested in my products and services, out of which only 5% of these inquires are coming from Yahoo & MSN Searches, so if I somehow manage to get top positions on my favorite keywords on Google also, would my inquiries increase considerably? I doubt that, it would surely help, but it’s not worth the sleep less nights I was devoting earlier for SEO.

I would now rather create a great looking website, launch brilliant products, develop more and more stuff in Flash, of course if it’s user friendly to my visitors and loads quickly, develop better advertising channels and wouldn’t care a damn about Search Engine Rankings, It would be better if I concentrate to convert my traffic better than creating textual ordinary looking pages for Search Engines or pray for Google’s Mercy on my website and awake countless nights for it, at least I learned the Lesson Quick.

The Lesson learned by me is to concentrate more on bringing visitors to your site and converting them well by giving them a sense of personal touch and value rather then only try and compete on Google Rankings and Page Rank.

Give them stuff for free, which is useful for them, provide them resources which are lying with you on your website for free, create a nice looking website, which interacts with your clients well, show your skills and the customers would love you, Merely getting a Top Ranking in Google and a Page Rank 7 won’t do wonders.

I have seen Page Rank 7 websites getting less than 50 visitors per day and Page Rank 4 Websites getting more than 500 visitors per day, So if you concentrate only giving your customers a value, it will automatically allow people to talk about you and give you your desired position, if you create a new site, provide valuable services, links will automatically flock to you and so do the visitors by word of mouth. It’s better to create a valuable site for your visitors then compete for the Page Rank 7.

Websites like Paypal.com, myspace.com, cnn.com, orkut.com etc didn’t have to spend very heavily on Search Engine optimization, where they did spend was on advertisements, pay per click, News and convert their customers well by providing exceptionally valuable and unique services, which lead to natural link building.

I doubt any link Building or SEO company would have built the 363, 000 links to paypal.com, or Yahoo would have hired 50 Search Engine Professionals to build their mammoth 1,990,000 links.

These companies concentrated on bringing more visitors to their site from every known channel and making them stick to their business rather than compete for Page Rank and top positions on a given keyword and they succeeded well.

While many sites which achieved Page Rank 7, by only competing for keyword position fail in the end, since they didn’t have an alternate sustainable business model or were not able to get their customers to buy their products.

One more myth that many people have is that if a given keyword is getting X amount of searches a month on Overture, they would perhaps receive the same amount of visitors on ther site too if they succeed in getting top rankings. That’s a myth.

For an example, my website is ranking No. 8 most of the times for the keyword “web design company” on Yahoo Search, According to Overture Keyword research tool the monthly searches done on this keyword are 13,000 for the month of January, 2007.

But according to my Webalizer stats, I’m getting not more than 100-120 visits per month from the given keyword, which is far less compared to the total number of visitors coming on my site ever month which is currently around 9000.

Link popularity is also known as link building, link exchanging, inbound links etc. It refers to the quality and quantity of incoming links to your site. It is a very important part of the search engine optimization process and plays an important role for getting high search engine rankings on specific keywords.

It is not enough to go for quantity of inbound links when building high link popularity. The quality of inbound links is much more important than quantity for getting that high link popularity. In other words, having a lower number of quality inbound links is more valuable than having a large quantity of poor links in for SEO.

Generally there are three types of link exchanging – one way link, reciprocal link and triangular. One way linking is the process of getting inbound links without having to give a link back. This means your link is not indexed until after 5 clicks from the directory’s main page. The further away your link is from the directory’s main page, the harder it will be for search engine spiders to crawl and index it. This drawback is not experienced with reciprocal link exchanging though, which is the reason most webmasters generally suggest reciprocal link exchanges in addition to one-way link exchange.

It is important to consider some basic things during reciprocal link exchanging in order to truly capitalize on the potential benefits. The following are some tips to consider when it comes to reciprocal link exchanging:


1) Link exchanging must be between relevant sites. Link exchange between non related sites might negatively affect the ranking of your websites in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)

2) Avoid triangular, or 3- way link exchanges.

3) Link pages should not be more than 2 clicks from the site’s index page.

4 ) The reciprocating page must be indexed in Google as well as other search engines.

5) Pay careful consideration to the meta tags of your links page. The links page should have proper meta tags and must be related to the your site’s keywords.

6) Use appropriate anchor text with relevant keywords when exchanging links with other sites.

7) Also check “no index, no follow” tag on the reciprocating page’s meta tags. If you find such this type of tag being used in the meta tags, then avoid exchanging links with those sites.

Since you only have a limited amount of characters that can fit in a title, you want to eliminate the unnecessary words, while implementing more commonly-searched keywords.
For example, no one is going to type "planet" with barnyards, let alone "greatest barnyards". People might be looking for professionally-manufactured barnyards, or barnyards of different colours.

What about now?
"Professional Barnyard Manufacturer of Coloured Barnyards... BarnyardDepot.com"

The phrase in the title is somewhat coherent, but we need to separate "Professional Barnyard Manufacturer" with Coloured Barnyards".

Now:
Professional Barnyard Manufacturer | Coloured Barnyards | BarnyardDepot.com

The next step is to modify the "BarnyardDepot.com" ending. In my professional opinion, it is redundant to add the domain name in the title, as it already appears along with the Google results. We also want to modify the title so that we have both variations of "Barnyard", which are "Barnyard" and "Barn Yard".

It is a symbiotic relationship. Yes, you have to pay another company and cut away at some of your margin, but the relationship is mutually beneficial. Furthermore, if each party is accommodated with solutions specific to the other’s industry where both stand to make a buck from offering the other’s services, the relationship will grow.

Links are very important to search engines. The quality of links and whether it is reciprocal or not, are important factors in evaluating the importance of a web page. Links from web sites with higher page ranks are a plus.

Registering with Directories and Search Engines:

It is very important the registration of a website with directories and search engine web sites. It is a way of telling the world that your web site exists. Avoid using automatic search engine/directory registration.

The Dangers of Black Hat SEO

Move to the top of the search results pages, increase your visibility, drive traffic to your site—with these promises, it is easy to understand why many companies are tempted to avail of the services of a search engine marketing company that use optimization techniques search engines like Google and Yahoo! consider illegal.

Known as Black Hat SEO, these methods include adding hidden texts, creating doorway pages (or, as Google defined them “pages created just for search engines”), key word stuffing (i.e., bombarding your content with too much keywords and phrases), using popular but irrelevant keywords and participating in link farms.

Despite the potential benefits they can provide you, however, Black Hat SEO should be avoided like a plague.

First of all, the search engines could drop your rankings so low that even the most diligent of searchers would have a hard time finding your site. And a lowered ranking, as any business whose web site has been penalized can tell you, is never a good thing. Kinderstart, a parenting web site for example, experienced a 70% decline in traffic and 80% revenue decrease after Google penalized the site in March 2005 for allegedly using Black Hat SEO techniques.


And if you think getting your ranks lowered is bad enough, then read this: in some cases, the search engines even ban sites and remove them from their index list—this means that, unless you’re able to successfully appeal your case, your site will never appear on search engine results page ever again. One example is the case of RICOH Germany. The German web site of the Japanese office-products manufacturer was “de-listed” by Google after the search engine discovered the site using spam techniques to bolster its rankings (the site has been re-listed after the company apologized and its webmaster made the modifications Google demanded).


If you’re really unlucky, aside from getting your site removed from the list, you might also suffer from the same embarrassing fate of BMW.de. While the banning of web sites are never really announced (even to the company that owns it), Google’s engineer Mike Cutts announced on his blog the removal of BMW.de’s site from the search engine’s index and even detailed the violations the web site committed. According to Mr. Cutts, the web site was banned because it used “doorway pages”. The Google Freshness Factor

The abstract of this patent application states that one of the problems of determining the freshness of a document indexed in a search engine is that the “last-modified-since” attribute isn’t always correct. Some webmasters have figured out they can change the modify date, but obviously a pattern of abuse developed. It doesn’t fool Google, because what Google looks for is actual modified content. As far as how Google determines how old or “fresh” a document may be is still somewhat of a secret. Lately, in the estimation of many, Google has done a very poor job in determining which web sites present as the freshest content in relation to relevancy.

This brings to mind a pertinent question. How does the freshness factor rank in determining relevancy? It has been determined by some that it doesn’t necessarily matter how fresh a document is to Google, especially if that document has many inbound links pointing to it. Henzinger is attempting to patent a more explicit form of freshness, since not all search engines use the “last modified since” attribute anyways, and stating that search engines need a more reliable way of determining overall updated content.

Unfortunately, with the implementation of the duplicate content penalty, we’ve been seeing problems with the freshness attribute of documents. With Google, in particular, the filter employed to whittle out duplicate content doesn’t appear to be taking into consideration the actual origin of the content. For many, this is becoming a great frustrating point. With the onslaught of the technological advances that Google has placed into the public realm within the last decade, it seems impractical and almost ridiculous that they would leave out the very concept of being able to determine the source of the fresh content. Yahoo and MSN do not appear to have this particular problem, so why does Google?

Another particular problem recently presented to the freshness factor, is Google’s own Removal Tool. Experiences with this tool have been much on the side of unpleasant, if at all useful. For some, the Google removal tool has been often mentioned “as a cure against many diseases.” Diseases such as duplicate content or temporary redirects, for example. While I have used it from time to time, I have done so with a cautionary tone, and never used it on a commercial website; rather only on my personal website or blog. Some of the side effects observed are definitely worth mentioning here, and I know I’m not alone.

If you’ve ever used the removal tool, you’ll notice that the page count of the website in question has not been changed, but rather the pages simply fail to show up. Why is this? Because with the URL Removal Tool, these URLs have not been deleted; they have only been filtered out. So even though these pages appear to have been removed, they are certainly still in the database somewhere.

The period of time Google uses to remove these URLs from their index is anywhere between three and six months. I say from three to six months, even though the Google documentation tells us 180 days; in my personal experience, it has been more like 90 days. Regardless of the period of time, rest assured, they are actually still there. How do I know this? Two reasons: one, I mentioned before that the number of pages are still listed as the same amount before the pages were removed; two, after the removal period, they show right back up in the index, as if they’d never left.
