Google - Internet Bully Or Striver For Excellence?

Recently, many users of Google AdWords have been shocked to find their price per click increase dramatically or find their ads dropping back into third or fourth page in the results. Yet this is not necessarily all bad news.

To followers of Google's progress recent events have not come as any surprise, as Google's intentions were well trailed last December. Specifically, they are targeting certain types of landing pages to which searchers are taken when they click on one of Google's AdWord advertisements.

Google AdWords are those small classified adverts you see on the right hand side of the page, when you use the Google search engine. Sometimes more "sponsored links" appear at the very top of the page. You will also come across Google AdWords, when visiting one of the thousands of Google's webmaster partners, who host AdWords on their web sites, under AdWords's sister program, AdSense.

Google has come from nowhere to set new standards of internet search quality in just seven years by strict adherence to its core values. Their success, founded on their twin mantras of "quality and "relevance", is a master class on the proposition that excellence is good business.

Once you understand these twin objectives, you begin to see the rational behind Google's recent actions and also draw valuable lessons from which your own web sites can profit.

These are the types of landing pages being targeted:
Squeeze pages: so called because they squeeze the name and address out of the visitor, who is obliged to type these details into the landing page before they are even permitted to view the contents of the web site.

Mini sites: these consist of just a single page sales letter.
AdSense only sites: due to the booming popularity of Google's own AdSense campaign, many web sites have been created purely to take advantage of the prospect of a "fire and forget" income these virtual shopping malls offer.

Some operators even set up so called "arbitrage web sites" profiting from the difference between the cost of the AdWord traffic and the income generated by the AdSense advertisements on the site. The profit thus generated by these hollow web sites is then multiplied by the ease with which hundreds -- even thousands -- of sites can be created with web site generating software.

Affiliate sites: some can be little more than a redirect, where the AdWords visitor is bounced from the landing page, via an affiliate link, straight to the actual provider of the product or service.

The common thread of all these types of landing pages is the arid experience they provide for the visitor. Judge for yourself, by putting yourself in the position of the visitor.

They come to a search engine because they are looking for a solution to a problem. They see an AdWord on Google with a tempting headline, that seems to fit the bill perfectly, and so they click on it.

Then -- instead of the information they expected -- their name and address is demanded by the squeeze page, almost in the manner of a highwayman, before they can follow up the promise of the advertisement's headline. Worse still, is their experience on the, so called, "arbitrage sites", where they end up on a unedifying merry-go-round of clicking one AdWord box after another!

It is that poor customer experience Google seeks to eliminate, not least because it reflects on the reputation of their search engine and AdWords program.

The irony is, Google are actually doing the squeeze page advertiser a big, big favor.

Why is that?
Here are some figures I have on conversion rates for squeeze pages:

Of visitors referred to a site (via affiliate's personal recommendation), 51% give name and address and 49% logged off, unrecorded.

Of visitors arriving from an organic search of search engine or directory, 39% gave name and address and 61% logged off.

Of visitors arriving via a pay per click advertising, only 18% gave name and address and a full 82% logged off.

As you can see from these bald figures, having a pay per click and squeeze page combo is a very bad idea anyway! So Google is actually doing those advertisers a favor by making them rethink their marketing approach. You also notice, when visitors come to the site with some prior knowledge -- even if only on an affiliate's recommendation -- their response is to be nearly three times better, even when faced with a squeeze page.

In fact, when visitors come to my site, having read an article of mine first, and are then faced with a squeeze page, over 70% of them are happy to enter their details.

What conclusions can we draw? This: just like going on a blind date, a visitor needs to know a bit about you before they will commit themselves.

So if you intend to use AdWords successfully, you must bring your visitors to a visitor friendly landing page, with some content (not an in-your-face sales page) that immediately chimes with the promise of the advertisement they have just clicked.

Take this simple step and your visitor will be pleased they've found what they were seeking and will be far less likely to leave your site. You too will be delighted with the increased response, when you eventually invite your visitor to give you their details.

And, on top of that, Google will reward you for becoming imbued with the Google ethos of providing relevant, quality content and the internet will take another tiny step up that long staircase to quality heaven.

7 Powerful Ways to Get One-Way Inbound Links

I grant permission to publish this article, electronically or in print, as long as the bylines are included, with a live link, and the article is not changed in any way (grammatical corrections accepted).

7 Powerful Ways to Get One-Way Inbound Links
It’s no secret that having links pointing to your website is very good for search engine rankings, and gives more ways for human visitors to find your website. So, how do you get one-way inbound links to your website? Well, there are numerous ways, and I am going to focus on seven of the most effective techniques.

You probably already know about link exchanges as great way for getting links to your website. However, with link exchanges, you have to give a reciprocal link back to the website that is linking to you. In this article I am going to show you how to get links to your website without giving a link back.

Ok, here are seven powerful ways for getting one-way inbound links:
1) Content – Packing your website full of useful content is one of the best ways to get inbound links. When you have a lot of content other webmasters will naturally link to you because your site will be valuable to them and their visitors.

Some examples of good content to add to your website would be; free articles, tools, tips, and resources related to your website theme. You could also have a blog that you update regularly with fresh content.

2) Testimonials – A big trend on the internet right now is adding testimonials to websites. The site owners typically get the testimonials from their site visitors and business customers. In exchange for the testimonial they usually give a link back to your website.

Every time you come across a great website, or have a good experience with a purchase, send a testimonial to the website owner. If they decide to publish your testimonial you will get a link to your website. After a while these links will add up to a significant amount.

3) Online Directories – There are hundreds of online directories that accept website submissions. This is a very good technique for getting one way inbound links. Many of the top directories require you to pay for inclusion or provide a link back to their directory. You can give the link back if you want, or pay if you have the extra money. However, there are also numerous directories that will accept your website without payment or a link back.

All you have to do is find the ones that accept free submissions and you will get your one way inbound links. You can find quite a few directories, and some other great information about submitting to directories at http://www.directory-pages.com/

4) Articles – Writing articles is one of the best techniques for getting one-way inbound links to your website. Many webmasters are looking for more content for their websites and Ezines. You can provide them with that content by writing articles and submitting them to websites, Ezines, and article directories.

In return for your effort you can put a little blurb about yourself and/or your business, with a link to your website, at the end of the article. You will rack up a very high amount of inbound links to your website by utilizing this technique. I have done it many times with a lot of success.

5) Free E-book – You can write an e-book and offer it for free in exchange for a link to your website. You can also put links to your website and other affiliate links in the e-book. Putting the links in the e-book will increase your website traffic and affiliate profits.

You are probably thinking that you can’t write an e-book. Well, yes you can! It doesn’t have to be some killer piece of work that you spend months writing. Instead, you can just make it a collection of your favorite articles, resources, and tools related to your website theme. As long as it is useful to your visitors they will gladly link to you in order to get it.

6) Blogs – There are actually a few ways to get one-way inbound links with blogs. The first way is simply to host a blog on your website and update it frequently. People tend to link to blogs because they provide content that is constantly being updated.

The second way you can get one-way inbound links with your blog is to submit it to blog directories. Just like website directories, there are tons of blog directories on the internet that you can submit to for free. Just do a search on Google for “blog directory” and you will find many of them to submit too.

The third way of getting inbound links with a blog is to host it somewhere other than on your website. Then, provide a link from your blog to your website. After you have done that, you can submit your blog to directories for the extra page rank and added exposure. Use this third technique with as many blogs as you have time to update regularly with quality content.

7) Free Article Directory – Create an article directory on your website and allow your visitors to submit articles to it. Ask for a link back to your website in exchange for the article submission. This will build your inbound links and create free content for your website. I have successfully used this technique for quite a while. You can see one of my article directories at http://www.work-at-home-jobs-iowa.com/article

Alright, there you go, you now have seven very effective techniques for getting one-way inbound links to your website. Get started on them right away and you should see your search engine rankings rise, your website traffic increase, and your profits explode. If you have any questions about any of these linking techniques just let me know, I will be happy to help. You can find my “contact me” link at the bottom of my website.

How to Launch your Website into Internet Stardom

With millions of websites popping up on the internet each and everyday, we all have pretty much come to the conclusion that it is nearly impossible to stand out. From music websites to blogs about celebrity gossip – everything has been replicated, distributed, and criticized. Amid these millions of similarities, it can be frustrating to gain any type of audience. Luckily, there are many ways to not only launch your website into internet stardom, but also find the niche that you have been desperate for.

Link Building
One of the most popular forms of getting your name out there is through link building. This generally means submitting your website address to a plethora of different search engines, directories, and websites. When your website address shows up on other web pages, it helps build your search engine ranks. Not sure where to turn first? Most people start off by submitting their websites to the search engine Gods such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Though rumors are circulating that MSN is going to be retiring from one of the top spots, it is still essential to get your website onto its engine. After all, MSN is one of the easiest to target. Additionally, webmasters like to connect with others. By searching for your website’s topic, you can easily find people who share common interests.

Reciprocal-Link Exchange
Once you have found a website that is similar to yours, it is imperative to try and build a relationship with them. Especially if you are a beginner, you absolutely need to acquire back links. This occurs when you display their website address on your own website, and they reciprocate by doing the same. As a result, you will not only have a higher search engine ranking, but you will be promoting yourself to other audiences at the same time. Want to know a secret? Some say that if you target a popular website that already has a steady ranking, you may be able to jump up to the first thousand results much more quickly.

Article Submissions
One trick that many newcomers don’t acknowledge is the idea of article submissions. Are you a writer who has always dreamt of being published on the internet? Many webmasters are now writing articles on their website’s topic and submitting it to DMOZ, and other article directory websites. In most cases, webmasters sneak in their own web address to promote their site and build a back link. Moreover, you can also write a press release announcing your website and what it has to offer. By doing this, fellow webmasters and potential visitors can be targeted.

Regardless of what your goal is, promoting your website can be amusing. All it takes is a creative mind, remembering that back links count miraculously, and that networking is essential. With those concepts intact, you can easily stand out among the crowd. The more creative individual paths you take, the more likely you are to have the #1 website on the web.

Searching The Internet Without Seach Engines

The World Wide Web contains more than ten million websites with thousands more being added daily from all over the world, and search engines are tasked with presenting the most relevant pages based on the search criteria entered. Finding a large and popular site like www.irs.gov is easy because it is related to a large agency, but a small site like mine www.consumermortgagereduction.com would be impossible without the use of search engines. The task of finding a website that relates to a specific subject would be almost without the use of the search engine, yet they perform this task with relative ease using tools that may be unknown to most users of search engines.

The first of these tools utilize by search engines are web-crawlers; they search sites based on meta-tags, or the hidden descriptions of the site encoded in the head of the web page. By using web-crawlers to spider websites, the search engine does not have to search the entire webpage to return results, just the first few lines of code. The majority of the code web-crawlers spider is contained in the section or top of the web page, and search engines use this information to list relevant search terms results.
Meta-bots and Google-bots are used by search engines in the same way that web-crawlers are deployed, and the only difference is that bots read the first lines of text that is visible on the browser of the user. Meta-bots and Google-bots are useful in providing content oriented sites with a quick description of the site, and is use to match the relative words in a search engine query.

The indexer is not a search engine par say, for example the largest indexer is Yahoo, which is not a search engine like Google that is a true search engine. A true search engine uses keyword searches to find website, whereas an indexer stores a link to sites based on categories. To submit a website for inclusion into an indexer the submitter has to find a relevant category that matches their website, but to submit to a search engine they only have to submit the site Universal Resource Listing or URL and the search engine deploys its web-crawler or bots to index the site.

The search engine has become an intricate part of life, especially in the lives of students that utilize the web for research. Without the search engine the search for sites that contain the terms being searched for would almost be impossible to locate in a world of millions of websites.

Need for Speed -- The Turbocharger Way

To increase the power from your car engine, you can increase the size of the engine, or increase the pressure of the air in the intake manifold using a supercharger or a turbocharger. Increasing the sheer size of your car’s engine will give you more power, but will also result in higher fuel consumption (and costs) as well as a heavier engine.

So let’s look at increasing the air pressure in the combustion chamber. A supercharger, driven by the engine, forces more air into the inlet manifold to generate more power at engine speed; however, since the supercharger is run off the engine, it actually uses some of the extra power it generates.

A turbocharger, on the other hand, achieves the same objective of forcing more air into the manifold, but it’s driven by the waste energy from the exhaust manifold, not by the engine. It is basically a turbine and a compressor connected by a common shaft and supported on a bearing system. The turbocharger can convert waste energy from the exhaust manifold into compressed air, which it pushes into the engine. This allows the engine to produce more power and torque and improves the overall efficiency of the combustion process.

The first prototype of a turbocharged diesel engine in history was in 1915 by Dr. Büchi, Chief Engineer of Sulzer Brothers Research Department. Around the 1940’s the aircraft gas turbine led to advances in materials, technology and design; which brought on the turbocharger development of radial turbines and led to the use of radial flow turbos on small automotive diesel engines. During the 1950’s the major engine producers like Volvo and Cummins started to experiment with turbocharged engines for trucks. This led to a German engineer producing a more innovative compact design and in 1954 the engine producers were starting to offer a range of turbocharged engines. Pole position at Indianapolis in 1952 was won by a car powered by one of Cummins’ turbocharger engines.

The benefits of using a turbocharger are increased engine power output, improved fuel consumption, improved emissions, and altitude compensation. So in the end a turbocharger is the way to go if you’re looking for that little bit of speed in your ride.

Creating a Search Engine Friendly Web Site

The object of every webmaster is to get their site listed in a search engine, but what do you do to make that happen? There is so much competition out there.
Here are some ideas and things I've noticed with my websites. First of all Google likes urls that don't have question marks. Sure, we've all seen those type of urls in Google, but they are less likely to appear than short static looking urls. Add that to the fact that search engines love updated content, and what do you think might come in handy? Well, a message board is a great place to start. Seo-board.com has a free forum that's easy to install and has search engine friendly urls. Your visitors help you create content, and the search engine friendly urls help get you more visitors through search engines. A site that doesn't have some way for it's visitors to interact doesn't have nearly as many repeat visitors anyway.

Next, scatter some images around to give your visitors something to look at besides just text. Use images that relate to your subject. If your site is about cars put images of automobiles everywhere. You can get a lot of traffic through search engine image sections. It's not as targeted as subject searches, but any traffic is better than none.

Start a links directory with link trades that relate in content to your site. Link trades aren't as popular as they used to be, but you have to start somewhere, and if nobody links to you then forget it. Just make sure the sites you trade links with share common subject matter as much as possible. Use correct title tags in your directory as you should for your entire site. Never repeat the same title tag on every single page. If a page has car links, then the title tag should read "car links", "car sites", or something similar not "buy acme because we care".

Never repeat exact content from one of your sites on another site. Posting articles you get from free article sites seems to be ok with the search engines as long as you have unique content surrounding the article text like menus, images, links, etc.

Don't be afraid to start out a site with just a few pages. You don't really have to start out with a huge site all at once. Search engine robots like to come back to sites that continually update so it just makes sense to roll out your site as you create it. One thing to keep in mind though, if you are exchanging links, don't expect webmasters to trade with you if your site has broken links or if there is nothing there content wise. You shouldn't have broken links regardless. Search engines aren't too receptive to links that go nowhere.

There a lot of things to keep in mind. I've noticed time and time again sites that are well done visually, but seem to care less about search engine optimization. You can't focus all your attention of the search engines, but it makes a big difference in the success of your site to keep them in mind as you go along creating content for your web site.
