Optimize At Web Design Stages

Are you now thinking, what does this mean? Let me just say that most of my customers could have had their websites rectified whilst still in the design stage instead of costly repairs once finished. This does not only go for those who pay, but more than ever, those who learn web design for themselves to design and manage their own website. The costly ones are generally those who pay a web designer as they have no knowledge of web design and thus need to pay for all the repairs to be made by an SEO, whereas someone with a little skill in design can simply make most of the modifications themselves, making a much lower cost.

If you're designing a website, having one made, whatever the case, seriously stop now. What you want to do is this, have one page made and pay a professional SEO to find the faults, identify weaknesses and give you the advice and solutions to strengthen all aspects in the one page first. The faults and characteristics that an SEO will discover with one page will generally follow through all pages of a website. The only other necessary changes are keywords and copywriting text. An SEO will generally advise what keywords to utilise and you simply send these to your web designer or utilise them yourself within each separate page to cover all avenues. An SEO will give you all the information you require, such as for flash, navigation, page size, etc (for a cost). You will not get away with this for $20 dollars. If you do, guess what? You just probably found one of those unprofessional SEO’s that I mention in other articles, because that sort of money would not cover my time to properly evaluate a webpage manually and report on it.

This can save you literally thousands of dollars by having an SEO fix something you have either paid for already, or spent a lot of time on yourself. It is much easier to have a professional SEO evaluate the one page, pay them for the extra information you require, such as all relevant keywords, copywriting advice for each page that you have planned, etc. It is money in your pocket, think smart about how you do business and get it right from the start. I am sure this is how most successful businesses work or else they would be broke having to correct faults constantly. SEO is no different, a couple of hundred or so well spent dollars in the design phase of a website, can save thousands, trust me on this, I do it and see it often.

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is simply a marketing term for the natural development of a website or SEO Organic. Organic SEO allows a website to gain free listings within the major search engines without regular ongoing marketing costs. SEO comprises many aspects to complete a total marketing package. The difference is whether the SEO package is natural in form to comply with the search engines, or artificial in an attempt to cheat the search engines. It's no secret that every website owner wants the top position within the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP's). What is unknown to many is that artificially manipulating a website or other external elements will not allow a website see the top position for very long. Artificial manipulation is what you hear when someone says "hit or miss" optimization.

Let me quickly define professional and unprofessional. There are several key advantages and disadvantages to organic SEO, as there are with most things. Organic SEO may be costly, and it will be costly when performed by a professional. Once performed, however, your website will achieve long term stable high rankings for the one outlay, then your costs are finished. The disadvantages of organic SEO is that because it is designed to obtain completely free high ranking, it takes some time to see the results. Results average between 1 - 6 months for stable performance depending on your actual keyword phrase. You also need to allow for minor tweaking and ongoing link analysis work to be performed. A problem that can occur, and will occur for competitive keyword phrases for example; internet, computer, marketing, etc, is that other websites are constantly tweaking to out perform yours. SEO Marketing Hype

Everybody markets their products, however; there is correct marketing and inappropriate marketing. Now let me eliminate a few things; there is no such thing as a Guaranteed #1 ranking within directory inclusion. You will not find any professional SEO tell you otherwise. What you will find is some unprofessional SEO attempt to mislead you into believing that they can achieve this through Doorway, Constant Submission (Spamming) or Cloaking your WebPages to perform in individual engines. Even these unethical, unprofessional techniques are not guaranteed and illegal to search engine policy. SEO's who utilise these unethical methods risk having your domain name banned or penalised leaving you in the dark and with no chance of retribution.

This does not mean that Guaranteed #1 Ranking does not exist, because it does, but only in Pay Per Click (PPC) or as some call it, Cost Per Click (CPC). This is not directory included though, only who is willing to pay the most per click to hold a #1 position across a sponsored network for individual keyword phrases. So, unless the company is clearly advertising this method of inclusion to you, DO NOT go near them. Ensure that you know exactly where your website will be viewed with PPC as you may end up paying for US exposure instead of UK, Australia, etc. Many people have lost thousands through paying for exposure that did not bring sales due to the regional limitations. Yahoo US is not the same as Yahoo UK or Yahoo Australia & New Zealand, etc.
IMPORTANT: This statement is Fact, not an observation. Thoroughly read terms and conditions and do your homework first. Send emails, phone, ask as many SEO as possible for advice, look for similarities and then compare service and price from the credible professionals.

Guaranteed Ranking, this is certainly achievable to some minimum guarantee, like Top 10 or Top 20 listing in the major engines. Any professional SEO could give this type of Guarantee as a minimum, if not then they ARE NOT as professional as they are trying to make you believe. The difference is generally this; SEO's that guarantee top 10 ranking will generally limit the keyword phrases to only one per page. Top 10 guaranteed ranking is made more specific as it is more time consuming to an SEO to monitor. SEO's that guarantee Top 20 ranking will generally allow you more keyword phrases as they have a little more room to play with. At the end of the day, you are going to be seen more often for more keyword phrases. I offer Top 20 ranking with my SEO firm, due to that fact that your website will be seen more frequently for a greater exposure of keywords. This will only be two or three key phrases per page, though it is better than one key phrase. Your website will still generally rank within the Top 10 for most targeted key phrases, from actual SEO professionals, due to the extensive modifications they will make to your WebPages.

Another good one that I see from some confused clients is Guaranteed Submission. When you read something like guaranteed submission, you would presume that means that your website will be included in the search engines advertised, WRONG. Again, read the fine print within the terms and conditions and you will generally find that unethical SEO’s are only guaranteeing the actual submission process, though attempting to make you believe otherwise. It is all in the wording and how they phrase and structure their sentences. There is no such thing as guaranteed inclusion, not even PPC guarantee inclusion. Every search engine has specific editorial policies that a website must comply with, some more stringent than others. Some of these unprofessional SEO even submit a compliant website, then once listed, change the website to perform disregarding the search engine policy. Again, this opens your domain name and website up to penalties or being banned from that search engine.

Meta information, this is a sure winner, or used to be anyway. Many SEO advertise meta as an important selling point. Meta information is the information contained within the section of a webpage. Search Engine Optimization Standards

To me there is no in between in regards to optimization, either a webpage is optimization or it isn't. A professional SEO will not give you a choice of options when it comes to what they optimize within any given webpage. You will only see options available from unprofessional SEO in the range of what actual modifications are made to each webpage. At no stage should a user have a choice when it comes to what is modified, with the exception of copywriting. The website owner is the professional in relation to the content within each webpage or product item, so the website owner must provide this information to some extent. The SEO copywriter would then enhance the written material supplied, with relevant keyword phrases, to suit search engine characteristics and current search criteria.

Many changes that an SEO will make to a website will not even affect the actual look of a webpage. Some required SEO might impact the website owner's taste, however; the website owner must be conversant with what they are employing an SEO to accomplish to start with. It is very much a give and take affair between the SEO and the website owner. As a website owner, remember who the professional is and what service you’re looking for. I am often asked by owners why I need to change something, my answer is generally "you employed my services to get your website high ranking, not the other way around", simple as that to me. If a person does not want high ranking for their website, then stop wasting my time and your time looking for an SEO, and be happy with no publicity for your website from the Internet.

Let’s discuss what to look for when you view an SEO website and come across packages. As stated already, the level of optimization should never be given as a choice. The only choices you could possibly have for packages from a professional SEO are the amount of pages an SEO will modify. Example, bronze < 10 pages, silver < 50 pages and gold < 100 pages, then with a possible quote for larger Websites. Other options include but are not limited to whether you are submitted through the long waiting free submission or paid rapid inclusion, a manual directory submission campaign or an in-depth report on your website to allow you to see what is wrong and structure your budget to suit, etc. These are not the same as offering different levels of optimization to a webpage. Stay away from any SEO that offers such services. Please ensure that you check everything that an SEO is offering before payment. Treat it no differently to shopping around for a new car, because the cost can vary between $50 to $10,000 or more, depending on what your purchasing and the size of your website and nature of optimization it requires. The best means is to find comparable products and services with other businesses and examine costs. Then take the best product or service that suits your requirements, not necessarily the best price.

Free vs. Paid Submission

Free vs Paid submission has been a topic of debate for many years with regard to the actual credibility of services. Several business and websites offer Free submission services. Usually the program gives you a report, of sorts afterwards, detailing successful or unsuccessful acceptance of your site. Let me just say that I do not endorse free Online submission services. Their own credibility was shot with me the minute I did not receive a confirmation email from Scrub the Web when their report said "site submitted successfully". Scrub the web requires a confirmation first before considering to crawl your site? Debate That Concept!

If you must utilise online submission services then there are credible services such as World Wide Promoter. Submission through these type of services has only one benefit that I can see, submission to some minor engines and directories that you would not waste your time with generally. It is these services that see the failure of many websites, due to the nature of what tests have been established with search engine algorithms. Having your website linked in FFA link farms can do more damage to your website. Do Not get fooled by the big "Blast Your Website To 1,000,000 Link Pages". Be careful and steer clear!

Perpetual submission is the next step from this, another waste of time, though some make a good living selling the dream. You know the one's, $49.95 for 12 monthly submissions to 100,000 engines, directories and link pages (Hint: Link Pages = Link Farms). This service is what's more commonly referred to as "spamming a search engine". Believe me when I say, constant submission to a search engine WILL NOT increase your ranking. It is this type of service that can have your domain name penalised or removed and banned permanently. Is the risk really worth it? Read the fine print within these type of websites for the big disclaimer, "we hold no liability for these submissions" or something like that.

Lets get serious! Directory submission. Now your talking quality and value for money. A professional SEO will not even attempt to sell you search engine submission, but more importantly directory submission. Most major search engines and partners (Google, Inktomi, Looksmart, All The Web, etc) will automatically pick up and spider your website for free providing your site is spider friendly and listed within directories. That's the friendly and most cost effective method to achieve search engine listings.

Now, to other marketing. Rapid paid inclusion and Pay Per Click (PPC) advertisement. Directory inclusion assures you that on approval of your application, your site will be added to that search engines directory and all partners which they provide, eg; Inktomi feeds MSN > Hotbot > etc. If your a new website and cannot wait to be picked up for free, or your website data is changing daily, then paid inclusion is for you. Once your included in a directory it is rare for an engine to drop you, even if you do not renew your subscription. Renewing really only assures you of a constant refresh for changing data. If your site data doesn't change often, then I wouldn't worry about it, as the spider / crawler will visit your site frequently to check for updates.
PS. You don't need meta tags telling the robots when to visit either, they will visit often without another line of code.

PPC requires expert marketing advice and management to be run effectively. If you do not have the time to learn and manage your campaign, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT. PPC is very effective when utilised correctly by itself or in conjunction with free listings. PPC has, and will make or break your company, depending on how it is managed. PPC has to be monitored to ensure that you are gaining the Return On Investment (ROI) from the advertisement cost and exposure. At the end of the day though, marketing will only get them to your site, you have to keep them there!

In summary, stop wasting your time and/or money with rubbish perpetual and free online submission tools. Use them once, get listed in those waste of time places and then learn or pay to do the job right the first time. Move on.

When it comes to search engine optimization, there are certain common mistakes that I see people making over and over again. Here's a list of the 10 most common mistakes that I see people making. By avoiding these mistakes, you can avoid a lot of
problems.

1) Optimizing your site for the wrong keywords

The first step in any search engine optimization campaign is to choose the keywords for which you should optimize your site. If you initially choose the wrong keywords, all the time and effort that you devote in trying to get your site a high ranking will go down the drain. If you choose keywords which no one search for, or if you choose keywords which won't bring in targeted traffic to your site, what good will the top rankings do?

2) Putting too many keywords in the Meta Keywords tag

I often see sites which have hundreds of keywords listed in the Meta Keywords tag, in the hope that by listing the keywords in the Meta Keywords tag, they will be able to get a high ranking for those keywords. Nothing could be further from the truth. Contrary to popular opinion, the Meta Keywords tag has almost completely lost its importance as far as search engine positioning is concerned. Hence, just by listing keywords in the Meta Keywords tag, you will never be able to get a high ranking. To get a high ranking for those keywords, you need to put the keywords in the actual body content of your site.


3) Repeating the same keyword too many times


Another common mistake that people make is to endlessly repeat their target keywords in the body of their pages and in their Meta Keywords tags. Because so many people have used this tactic in the past (and continue to use it), the search engines keep a sharp lookout for this, and may penalize a site which repeats keywords in this fashion. Sure, you do need to repeat the keywords a number of times. But, the way you place the keywords in your pages needs to make grammatical sense. Simply repeating the keywords endlessly no longer works. Furthermore, a particular keyword should ideally not be present more than thrice in your Meta Keywords tag.

4) Creating lots of similar doorway pages

Another myth prevalent among people is that since the algorithm of each search engine is different, they need to create different pages for different search engines. While this is great in theory, it is counter-productive in practice. If you use this tactic, you will soon end up with hundreds of pages, which can quickly become an administrative nightmare. Also, just imagine the amount of time you will need to spend constantly updating the pages in response to the changes that the search engines make to their algorithms. Furthermore, although the pages are meant for different engines, they will actually end up being pretty similar to each other. The search engines are often able to detect when a site has created such similar pages, and may penalize or even ban this site from their index. Hence, instead of creating different pages for different search engines, create one page which is optimized for one keyword for all the search engines. 5) Using Hidden Text

Hidden text is text with the same color as the background color of your page. For example, if the background color of your page is white and you have added some white text to that page, that is considered as hidden text. Many webmasters, in order to get high rankings in the search engines, try to make their pages as keyword rich as possible. However, there is a limit to the number of keywords you can repeat in a page without making it sound odd to your human visitors. Thus, in order to ensure that the human visitors to a page don't perceive the text to be odd, but that the page is still keyword rich, many webmasters add text (containing the keywords) with the same color as the background color. This ensures that while the search engines can see the keywords, the human visitors cannot. The search engines have long since caught up with this technique, and ignore or penalize the pages which contain such text. They may also penalize the entire site if even one of the pages in that site contain such hidden text.

However, the problem with this is that the search engines may often end up penalizing sites which did not intend to use hidden text. For instance, suppose you have a page with a white background and a table in that page with a black background. Further suppose that you have added some white text in that table. This text will, in fact, be visible to your human visitors, i.e. this shouldn't be called hidden text. However, the search engines can interpret this to be hidden text because they may often ignore the fact that the background of the table is black. Hence, in order to ensure that your site is not penalized because of this, you should go through all the pages in your site and see whether you have inadvertently made any such mistake.

6) Creating Pages Containing Only Graphics

The search engines only understand text - they don't understand graphics. Hence, if your site contains lots of graphics but little text, it is unlikely to get a high ranking in the search engines. For improving your rankings, you need to replace the graphics by keyword rich text for the search engine spiders to feed on.

7) Not using the NOFRAMES tag in case your site uses frames

Many search engines don't understand frames. For sites which have used frames, these search engines only consider what is present in the NOFRAMES tag. Yet, many webmasters make the mistake of adding something like this to the NOFRAMES tag: "This site uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them". For the search engines which don't understand frames, this is all the text that they ever get to see in this site, which means that the chances of this site getting a good ranking in these search engines are non-existent. Hence, if your site uses frames, you need to add a lot of keyword rich text to the NOFRAMES tag. 8) Using Page Cloaking

Page cloaking is a technique used to deliver different web pages under different circumstances. People generally use page cloaking for two reasons: i) in order to hide the source code of their search engine optimized pages from their competitors and ii) in order to prevent human visitors from having to see a page which looks good to the search engines but does not necessarily look good to humans. The problem with this is that when a site uses cloaking, it prevents the search engines from being able to spider the same page that their users are going to see. And if the search engines can't do this, they can no longer be confident of providing relevant results to their users. Thus, if a search engine discovers that a site has used cloaking, it will probably ban the site forever from their index. Hence, my advice is that you should not even think about using cloaking in your site. 9) Using Automatic Submission Tools

In order to save time, many people use an automatic submission software or service to submit their sites to the major search engines. It is true that submitting your site manually to the search engines takes a lot of time and that an automatic submission tool can help you save a lot of time. However, the search engines don't like automatic submission tools and may ignore your pages if you use them. In my opinion, the major search engines are simply too important for you not to spend the time to submit your site manually to them. In order to speed up the process of submitting your site, you can use our free submission tool which allows you to submit your site manually to all the search engines, without having to go to the "ADD URL" pages of the individual engines. 10) Submitting too many pages per day

People often make the mistake of submitting too many pages per day to the search engines. This often results in the search engines simply ignoring many of the pages which have been submitted from that site. Ideally, you should submit no more than 1 page per day to the search engines. While many search engines accept more than 1 page per day from a particular domain, there are some which only accept 1 page per day. Hence, by limiting yourself to a maximum of one page per day, you ensure that you stay within the limits of all the search engines.

11) Devoting too much time to search engine positioning

Yes - I lied. There's another common mistake that people make when it comes to search engine optimization - they spend too much time over it. Sure, search engine placement is the most cost effective way of driving traffic to your site and you do need to spend some time every day learning how the search engines work and in optimizing your site for the search engines. However, you must remember that search engine optimization is a means to an end for you - it's not the end in itself. The end is to increase the sales of your products and services. Hence, apart from trying to improve your site's position in the search engines, you also need to spend time on all the other factors which determine the success or the failure of your web site - the quality of the products and services that you are selling, the quality of your customer service, and so on. You may have excellent rankings in the search engines, but if the quality of your products and services are poor, or if your customer service leaves a lot to be desired, those high rankings aren't going to do much good.

After getting a website ready according to SEO, Search Engine Submission is the next crucial step. Submitting your website means that the search engine knows your pages exist. It is better to rely on professional companies who provide search engine services.
There are three ways of search engine submission to get your website listed in the search engines. Firstly, you can submit your site directly to the search engine using a free submit form. Secondly, you can let the search engine find your site through the links to your site from other sites such as directories or thirdly, pay the search engine to index your site.
Most of the search engines have a free submission form that needs to be filled. You will have to submit the URL of your homepage. Once the search engine submission is done, you just need to wait. It will be pointless to waste time in re-submitting your website as it will not help to improve your ranking in any way. You may find that all search engines do not provide a form. There is no need to worry as your links will be found on other sites thus making your website easy to locate. It is therefore important to get your site listed in the major directories.
Search engine submission should not be done blindly. It is important to take out time to find the best category that suits your site. Each directory provides submission guidelines which should be read properly. If you follow the guidelines, the chances of being listed will increase and the amount of time it takes to get listed will be decrease.
After you've submitted to major directories, you can begin submitting to other directories as well. It is also very important to submit to local or thematic directories that are relevant to the content of your site. It will take time for the search engines to index your site after it has been listed in the major directories. So patience is the keyword. It may take a couple of weeks before your site may start appearing in the index of the major search engines.
After the search engine submission service providers have submitted your URL to a search engine, it will be placed for their search engine robots to review. It will review the contents thoroughly judging if the links are properly used. Once you submit your homepage, all the other pages of your website will be automatically reviewed. The review process can take anything from a few days to a few weeks.
If you decide to go for the pay for search engine submission, you will save a lot of time. You will not have the need to wait for the search engine to find and index the pages of your site on its own.
Once the process of search engine submission is complete and accepted, it is time for results for all the labor that has been put in. The traffic and the clicks on your web site will increase. Be sure to watch your search engine referrals over a period of time to make sure that all search engines that you have submitted to are still sending traffic back to you.
